Dana Point Historical Society Campaigns to Save Blue Lantern Gazebo

The Dana Point Historical Society is working with Orange County in the hopes of saving the Blue Lantern Gazebo, a nearly century-old structure that has remained fenced off since a landslide in 2018.

In response to growing concerns, the Historical Society birthed the “Save the Blue Lantern Gazebo Committee” last fall, led by committee chair Keith Johannes. The group wants to see the gazebo moved farther from the bluff and restored before another landslide puts it at risk.

The gazebo sits at the top of the bluff overlooking Dana Point Harbor within the Ken Sampson Overlook park at the end of the Street of the Blue Lantern. According to the Historical Society, it was built in 1927 during Sidney H. Woodruff’s development of Dana Point and was used as part of his “Hollywoodland to the Sea” campaign, which brought prospective buyers from Los Angeles and Hollywood to the area…
