Thanks to a group of spirited model train enthusiasts, Pickens County has a delightful museum in the restored Tate Depot. You’ve probably driven past the building on Highway 53 just east of the four-way-stop; perhaps you’ve wondered what goes on there. It’s time to find out.
Current day
The Tate Depot houses HO and N scale* model railroads, a replica station agent’s office, archival photographs and a mini-library devoted to trains and railroads.
Artifacts include a telegraph machine, a wall-mounted payphone and an 8-day clock from a depot in Flowery Branch. Much of the original signage and beautiful woodwork has been preserved and is on display.
In addition to hosting civic, Scout and school groups, Tate Depot is open to the public monthly, every third Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Admission is free. There is also meeting space for up to 30 people…
