Abilene & Wylie ISD superintendents discuss potential negative impact of vouchers on Texas education

BIG COUNTRY, Texas ( KTAB/KRBC ) — In this week’s episode of Big Country Politics, the superintendents of Wiley ISD, Joey Light, and Abilene ISD, Dr. John Kuhn, discussed the potential impact of school vouchers in Texas, focusing on financial stability, accountability, and economic barriers.

Kuhn explained that the voucher plan proposed in Texas is “basically a diversion of what would be tax dollars out of the flow of revenue that the state uses to fund public schools to go toward scholarships for private school children.”

Light added, “The interesting thing about this is the voucher program is taking those public dollars when public dollars, according to the Texas Constitution, are for free and appropriate public schools. So it’s an interesting situation that we’re in.”

When asked about the potential benefits of a voucher program, Kuhn stated that he couldn’t think of any, while Light highlighted a lack of accountability.
