Dallas officials are working on changes to convenience store regulations regarding the placement of ATMs after police say thieves have continued to steal the machines despite current rules meant to make it harder.
The existing Dallas City Code requires automatic teller machines in convenience stores to be secured to the floor and located more than 12 feet away from glass windows and doors.
The measure was intended to deter “hook and chain” thefts, in which suspects chain an ATM to a vehicle and rip it from the building. However, Assistant Police Chief Teena Schultz has noted that criminals have adapted and continued stealing the machines…
