ATLANTA (WJBF) – As thousands of soccer fans prepare to travel to Atlanta for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the FBI is warning that cybercriminals are ramping up sophisticated scams designed to steal money and personal information.
Investigators say scammers are creating fake websites that closely resemble the official FIFA website, hoping fans will unknowingly provide credit card numbers, banking information, passwords and other sensitive data while purchasing tickets, merchandise or hospitality packages.
“FIFA is the talk. It’s where people are headed, it’s where people are spending money for tickets,” said Daniel Polk, a special agent with the FBI’s Atlanta Field Office. “Scammers recognize that, and so we’re seeing a lot of fake scam websites for tickets, sales, merch popping up right now, designed to steal people’s information and their money.”…
