Colorado School of Mines lays off about 16 employees, roughly 1% of its workforce

The Colorado School of Mines in Golden quietly laid off about 16 employees last week — roughly 1% of the university’s total workforce of around 1,600 people. University spokesperson Emilie Rusch confirmed the cuts, saying no additional positions are expected at this time. The school did not specify which roles or departments were impacted.

The university was quick to point out it’s not in financial trouble. In a statement, Rusch said that “while Mines remains financially strong, changing enrollment patterns, evolving administrative needs and increasing complexity across higher education require us to continually evaluate, prioritize and realign how we organize work and deliver services so Mines remains well positioned for the future.” In other words, the school says it’s getting ahead of the curve rather than reacting to a crisis…
