Shooting Near I-70 and Peoria Sends Victim to Hospital, Denver Police Hunt Suspect

A shooting near the interchange of Interstate 70 and Peoria Street sent one victim to a local hospital early Monday morning, and Denver Police say they are still working to identify a suspect. The extent of the victim’s injuries was unknown at the time of the report.

The Denver Police Dept. announced the investigation in a post on X shortly before 8 a.m., writing that officers were responding to a shooting in the area of I-70 and Peoria Street and that investigators were working to develop suspect information. The department directs anyone with emergency information to call or text 911, and it can be reached for non-emergency police services at 720-913-2000. As with any active investigation, the department cautioned that details are subject to change as the case develops.

A Corridor With a Violent History

The stretch of Peoria Street has seen severe gun violence before. In 2022, a fatal shooting south of I-70 on Peoria Street claimed the lives of two teenagers and a father of three, according to CBS News Colorado. More recently, Hoodline reported in April that a Denver man was sentenced to 48 years for a triple killing along the same corridor.

The I-70 and Peoria interchange sits just blocks from the Denver Police Department’s District 5 station at 4685 Peoria Street, which covers the Montbello and Far Northeast Denver neighborhoods, per city documentation cited in local reporting. The junction also functions as a major transit gateway, sitting less than a mile from RTD’s Peoria Station, where commuters connect to the A Line serving Denver International Airport and the R Line light rail, according to planning documents referenced in coverage of the area. Denver Health Paramedics maintain a dedicated emergency response post, Post 501, at the interchange specifically to ensure rapid medical dispatch for severe highway incidents, per RadioReference’s account of regional emergency operations.

Part of a Wider Citywide Trend

Monday’s shooting adds to a string of recent gun violence reported across Far Northeast Denver. Hoodline covered a fatal shooting in the same police district in July, in a story headlined Deadly Shots Rock Far Northeast Denver, and reported on an overnight shooting investigation in the adjacent Montbello neighborhood back in April. Just days ago, on August 7, Hoodline also reported on a separate non-fatal shooting on North Willow Street in a different part of the city, where police searched for a suspect after locating one victim…
