Des Moines man pleads guilty in birthday party shooting that injured one

DES MOINES, Iowa — A Des Moines man has pleaded guilty to several charges after a shooting at a child’s birthday party left a person injured earlier this year.

The shooting occurred on March 14 shortly before 10:30 p.m. The Des Moines Police Department says a dispute occurred at a home in the 3300 block of Columbia Street, where a party was being held, and that one person was shot during an argument, and both the shooter and the victim then fled the scene. Police stated a firearm was recovered.

Authorities say that as officers were at the scene, a man with a gunshot to the abdomen arrived at a local hospital. A criminal complaint filed in the case states that witnesses identified the shooting suspect as 19-year-old Kahmel Bonner, who was later located and interviewed by law enforcement.

Records state Bonner told officers that he had gotten into a fight with someone who was not the gunshot victim and had been holding his gun at that time. During the fight, Bonner reported being pushed and said he accidentally fired one round, which then struck a victim in another room. Documents in the case state that Bonner’s statement was consistent with those provided by witnesses.
