Pedestrian killed in Des Moines hit-and-run crash identified

DES MOINES, Iowa — The name of the pedestrian who died in a weekend hit-and-run crash in Des Moines has been released by police.

The victim of the May 24th crash has been identified as Kathleen Jean Peterson, 61, according to Sgt. Paul Parizek, Public Information Officer for the Des Moines Police Department.

DMPD officers and Des Moines Fire Department personnel were called to the 1000 block of E. Railroad Avenue just after 2:00 a.m. on Sunday after receiving reports of an injury. When officers arrived, they found Peterson in the roadway, deceased.

The investigation determined Peterson had been struck by a vehicle that fled the scene. Investigators used cameras from local businesses and residences as well as city traffic cameras to narrow the search for the vehicle involved to the Easter Lake Area neighborhood, Sgt. Parizek said. Just before 2 p.m., the vehicle believed to have struck Peterson was located in an apartment complex in the 2100 block of King Avenue.
