Des Moines Heritage Trust releases annual list of most endangered buildings

A former school, a former church and a cemetery vault are among the most endangered buildings in Des Moines, according to the Des Moines Heritage Trust’s annual list released Thursday.

And for the first time, an entire neighborhood made the list, which is designed to raise awareness of historic properties that are at risk and to encourage conversations about historic preservation, rehabilitation and adaptive reuse.

“Each building on this year’s list tells a different chapter of the Des Moines story,” Tim Waddell, president of the Des Moines Heritage Trust, said in a news release. “These places have educated generations of students, anchored neighborhoods, supported local commerce and served as gathering spaces for residents. Their histories are woven into the fabric of our city and preserving them helps ensure those stories remain visible for future generations.”…
