DES MOINES, Iowa — A Des Moines man who fatally struck a pedestrian with his vehicle and then fled from the scene in 2025 was sentenced on Thursday.
Nearly a year ago, 44-year-old Mario Campos was driving a Dodge Ram pickup truck near the intersection of Merle Hay Road and Hickman Road when police say he drove over the median, hit a traffic sign, and struck a pedestrian, before fleeing the scene.
The pedestrian, identified as 53-year-old Andrew Verwers, was transported to a hospital, but later died from his injuries.

According to court documents, officers later found Campos in the 2500 block of 44th Street, and as they spoke with him, he admitted to being the driver of the truck. Campos took a preliminary breath test, which showed he had a breath alcohol concentration over the legal limit, court records state.
