DES MOINES, Iowa — A business in Des Moines’ Historic East Village neighborhood was damaged by fire Tuesday night.
The fire at Bituminous Materials, 900 Raccoon Street, was called in by someone driving by at 9:52 p.m., said Lt. Tyler Mark, Public Information Officer for the Des Moines Fire Department. The business provides asphalt and paving materials.

When the first crew arrived on scene, heavy smoke and flames were visible coming from the building’s roof. Lt. Mark said a second alarm was issued about four minutes into the call because of concerns over hazardous chemicals in vats near the structure.
Crews were able to contain and extinguish the exterior flames pretty quickly and keep the fire from spreading to other structures, according to Lt. Mark. They then moved inside to address hot spots.
