SUV crashes into 20-foot hole early Thursday in Des Moines

DES MOINES, Iowa — A driver walked away with only minor injuries Thursday morning after crashing an SUV through a construction zone and ending up at the bottom of a 20-foot-deep hole.

It happened around 5:47 a.m. at the intersection of University Avenue and 39th Street, according to Sgt. Paul Parizek of the Des Moines Police Department. The intersection is blocked off because of a storm sewer construction project.

Man charged with second-degree murder in woman’s suspicious death

Members of the Des Moines Fire Department helped the driver out of the hole.

The accident remains under investigation but Sgt. Parizek said the initial trip report did not mention any impairment of the driver.
