DES MOINES, Iowa — A Weather Impact Alert Day is in place Tuesday, and the evening’s threat includes the possibility for damaging hail. That could do a number on your car if it’s not protected, and that becomes harder to do if you don’t have your own garage. Local 5 asked the City of Des Moines and AAA what measures you can take if you find yourself in this situation.
Public parking garages
If you live in Des Moines, you can find all city-owned parking garages in the downtown here. On the page, scroll down until you see “Parking Map”. From there, you can click on different garages on the map to find where they’re located. You can also use the search function to find a garage that’s close to where you live.
Hail covers
If shelter isn’t an option for you, you can add padding to your car to protect it. Hail covers can absorb some of the damage, and they can be found at most local auto shops or department stores. Prices range from right around $30 to the $100s, depending on what quality and padding you’re looking for. If you can’t afford a cover, you can use blankets and hold them down with bungee cords.
Insurance options
Other than active ways to keep your car shielded, having a plan in place is key, said Nebraska-Iowa AAA spokesperson Brian Ortner.
“If you’re leaving work and you’re taking your route home, think about those safe places you might be able to stop,” said Ortner. “If something does arise, preparation is definitely important this time of year.”
