Can heavy rain increase nitrate levels in our water sources? What experts say

IOWA CITY, Iowa — With recent heavy rain coming down in Iowa and Des Moines’ nitrate removal facility at high usage for this year, some may wonder if the two are connected.

Central Iowa Water Works Executive Director Tami Madsen said rain does affect Des Moines’ water sources and their nitrate concentrations.

“Weather patterns do impact what we see in the river and in our source water conditions,” Madsen said. “In a drought or with rain, we do see fluctuations in nitrate concentrations in the river, but once that water is treated and it goes through our treatment facility, that finished water quality is the finished water quality.”…
