DES MOINES, Iowa — A Des Moines man has avoided prison time for shooting at an occupied car late last year.
On the evening of December 21, the Des Moines Police Department responded to a report of a shooting near 22nd Street and Washington Avenue. According to the DMPD, Abisai Carrillo, then 19, fired a gun at a car, which contained several occupants. No injuries were reported.
Carrillo was charged with attempted murder, a class B felony; intimidation with a dangerous weapon to injure or provoke fear, a class C felony; person ineligible to carry dangerous weapons, a serious misdemeanor; and fourth-degree theft, a serious misdemeanor.

According to court records, Carrillo initially pleaded not guilty, and his defense team filed a notice claiming the shooting was in self-defense.
In March, Carrillo pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of going armed with intent, a class D felony. He also pleaded guilty to intimidation with a dangerous weapon – threat, as well as the original charges of person ineligible to carry dangerous weapons and fourth-degree theft.
