‘I really, really love this girl’: Reading program brings Des Moines students and seniors together

DES MOINES, Iowa (KCCI) – Students at Phillips Elementary are saying goodbye to their reading partners as the school year comes to a close, and they won’t be seeing them again in the fall, KCCI reports.

Students have been partnering with residents at Valley View Village throughout the school year. The program was designed to strengthen students’ literacy skills and create connections across generations.

For fifth-grade student Nora Brown, the visits are about much more than just books. She met a new friend in former East High School teacher Nancy Hanson. For the past two years, they’ve spent time reading and opening up to each other, building a friendship that’s grown way beyond just a learning activity…
