Free Durham program wants to help people save on housing. What’s the problem?

A Durham organization is trying to help people find places to live that cost $250-$700 per month.

That’s well below the average rent for a one-bedroom apartment in Durham — about $1,400, according to Apartments.com.

There’s demand for the free services that HomeShare Durham provides, pairing home seekers who make less than $80,000 a year — below the area median income for the Durham-Chapel Hill metro area — with home providers. In Durham County, 31% of people are “cost–burdened,” meaning they spend more than a third of their income on housing expenses, such as rent, mortgage payments, property taxes, insurance and utilities, The News & Observer previously reported…
