Arts & Sciences Council announced that Duke would start accepting transfers of online course credits and provided new updates about the Constellations programs in its Thursday meeting.

Thursday’s council meeting began with a policy change from the summer: although historically, Duke has prohibited online transfer credit, the Executive Committee of the council reversed that policy in response to proposed changes to federal accreditation policy.
In May, the Department of Education said negotiators had reached consensus on revisions to the academic accreditation regulations for colleges and universities. They later announced a proposed rule in August. As part of the proposed regulations, accreditors will have to require universities to facilitate the transfer of credits from other accredited institutions, as long as the content is comparable.
Before the changes were even announced, Molly Goldwasser, associate vice provost for academic affairs, and Frank Blalark, associate vice provost and university registrar learned that Duke was “out of compliance” with its accreditor, then known as the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges, because of the prohibition on online transfer credit…
