Parents, educators, health experts, lawmakers, others discuss cell phone use at NC schools

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — Parents, educators, public health experts, policy makers, and many others joined together at The Friday Institute for Educational Innovation on Thursday to discuss cell phone use in schools.

Krista Glazewski, the Executive Director of the Friday Institute, said they hosted the conversation on North Carolina State University’s campus to bring different perspectives together and help provide guidance. “We’re continuing to ask the question of what are we seeing and what does the research say, but also what do people experience on the ground, in schools, in homes, and in communities?” Glazewski said.

Glazewski said it’s been a hot topic for local school districts and families in North Carolina as a number of states introduce legislation to ban or restrict cell phone use in classrooms. A handful of states have already passed laws and adopted new rules this year.

“Part of that bigger conversation is a consideration of how do we think about student access to cell phones across the age span,” she said. “Are there any specific guidance we might be able to offer at the younger ages that might be different than what we offer at older ages when these kids are hitting their teenage years and beyond?”
