OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) — Lawmakers are considering a bill that would apply hefty punishment for students who assault teachers in classrooms or put other students in harm’s way.
Legislation drafted by Republican Senator Kelly Hines aims to enforce out-of-school suspension for students between third and twelfth grade, if they assault a teacher, bring a weapon to school, bring drugs and/or controlled substances to school, or steal from fellow students or staff.
Republican Senator Adam Pugh supports the bill, saying, “I have had a number of teachers who’ve told me they have been physically abused inside the classroom, only to have the child after a few minutes sent out of their classroom return.”
The measure received pushback from Democratic Senator Carri Hicks before being pushed forward, as the legislation now moves to a vote on the Senate floor…
