EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – As the El Paso Independent School District nears a decision on hundreds of potential layoffs and the Ysleta Independent School District continues to navigate financial strain, the Socorro Independent School District (SISD) is reporting signs of financial progress.

EPISD weighs financial exigency, staffing reductions as district faces budget challenges

Two years under state oversight and following a round of its own layoffs, SISD expects to operate within its means as the Board of Trustees prepares to adopt the 2026-2027 budget in the coming weeks.

According to a recent district financial report, SISD is currently operating within its adopted budget, with General Fund revenues exceeding expenditures by nearly $49 million through the end of April.

Key Financial Improvements

  • Growing Cash Reserves: The district’s cash balance is up nearly $25 million, reaching $66.7 million compared to $42 million at this same time last year.
  • Reduced Payroll Costs: Ongoing efforts to align staffing with enrollment trends have cut payroll expenses by approximately $8.4 million compared to the prior year.
  • Steady Revenue: Property tax collections are performing exactly as expected, with 99.3% of the current year’s budgeted levy already collected.

Despite these positive trends, the district will still need to borrow money to make ends meet this summer.
