Texas has a few things that people don’t mess with, and Buc-ee’s is definitely one of them. Mention the famous beaver, and before long someone will be telling you about the spotless bathrooms, the brisket sandwiches or the Beaver Nuggets.
That’s why I couldn’t help but laugh when comedian John Oliver decided to spend part of his HBO show taking shots at one of Texas’ most beloved brands. Of all the things he could’ve picked a fight with, he chose Buc-ee’s.
Why John Oliver Targeted Buc-ee’s
During a recent episode of Last Week Tonight, Oliver criticized Buc-ee’s history of filing trademark lawsuits against businesses it believes copied its famous branding.
Then, because this is John Oliver, he took things a step further by unveiling a parody convenience store called “Buc-Off,” complete with fake merchandise, a squirrel mascot named Mr. Nutterbutter and an open invitation for Buc-ee’s to sue him.

Whether you agree with him or not, you’ve got to admit it’s a pretty funny way to make a point.
