Opinion: I wasn’t passed over for EPISD trustee because I lacked qualifications. I lost because I wouldn’t conform

I didn’t get selected for the District 6 trustee seat for the El Paso Independent School District. It wasn’t because I didn’t bring my best, and it certainly wasn’t because I lacked the qualifications.

I lost because I insisted on being myself.

The El Paso Independent School District board wasn’t looking for accountability, directness or a fresh perspective. They wanted someone to fall in line, nod along to their idea of what a trustee should be, and blend smoothly into their existing team.

That same team watched a $52 million deficit pile up right under their noses…
