El Paso seeks clarity on Abbott’s data center rules

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — El Paso City Council is seeking clarification on Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s data center directives after he announced that Meta will comply with new statewide standards.

Gov. Abbott says Meta will follow standards Texas establishes for data centers

On Tuesday, Aug. 18, City Council is expected to discuss and send a letter to Abbott, asking questions about the specifics of the statewide standards for large-scale data centers in Texas and whether those standards apply to El Paso.

The agenda outlined many questions that residents have asked, such as if El Pasoans have to shoulder the electricity and water infrastructure costs and if the data centers will disrupt the flow of resources to neighborhoods and businesses.

Last week, Abbott stated that the tech company will comply with the new standards, which require Meta and other data centers across Texas to pay for their own electric infrastructure, reuse water and limit impacts to nearby neighborhoods and taxpayers…
