As temperatures are set to rise at the end of the week, local organizations are focusing on ways to help Erie’s homeless population stay safe and hydrated.
The Mercy Center for Women held its annual Perry Square Picnic on Wednesday, bringing together volunteers, staff, clients, and community members for a free meal. People lined up before lunch to receive a free lunch and essential items.
Organizers said events like these are critical in meeting immediate needs while also connecting individuals with services that can help them build a more stable future.
“We need to be more responsive, and we need to be able to embrace the individuals that we see on the streets and not be afraid, and to be able to give them guidance to places that can help them, like the Mercy Center for Women,” said Jennie Hagerty, the Executive Director of The Mercy Center for Women.
