The Last Word: The Strange History of Moorheadville Road’s “Ghost Hill”

Erie County’s section of Interstate 90 was completed almost 70 years ago. The entire project was an engineering marvel. However, there was one specific section above the interstate that people wanted to see. Many years have passed. However, I want to see it for myself.

I’m in North East Township at the overpass where Moorheadville Road spans Interstate 90. It was at this location where something happened in 1960 that caused some people to become very frightened. Others became very curious. It’s all documented in the September 22, 1960 edition of the Erie Daily Times. It’s an article about this section of Moorheadville Road that the paper called “Ghost Hill.”

The article reported that workmen were taking shelter here during a heavy rain. They saw rainwater running uphill to the top of the overpass. One worker was heard to say, “When I see rainwater running uphill, it’s time for me to head to a different section of the country.” The newspaper claims the worker quit his job and left town…
