The Erie County Department of Health is expanding its efforts to better track and address drug use in the community as overdose remains a major public health concern across Pennsylvania and locally in Erie County.
While officials note overdose deaths showed a decline in 2024, they emphasize that the crisis is still ongoing and continues to impact families across the region.
In 2023, Pennsylvania recorded more than 4,700 overdose-related deaths across all 67 counties. During that same year, Erie County reported 116 overdose deaths, underscoring the continued need for prevention, treatment, and intervention efforts at the local level.
Health officials with the Erie County Department of Health say the goal moving forward is not only to monitor overdose trends more closely, but also to better understand the underlying factors contributing to these deaths.
