A house fire on West Fourth Street last week prompted a community prayer vigil and donation drive Monday night to support a family that lost nearly all their possessions. The event honored Steve Green, who is being recognized for rescuing three relatives from the burning home.
Green successfully escaped the residence but returned inside after learning that three young family members were trapped by flames on the second floor. While he was able to lead his relatives to safety, Green sustained significant burns to his hands, neck and back during the rescue.
Green identified the family members he rescued as his little cousin, nephew and little brother. He said he did not hesitate to re-enter the burning building once he realized they were trapped. “When I got up there they jumped on me” Green said. “I told them to close their eyes and hold their breath. And I took them out there.”…
