Guides Bring River Culture to Springfield Drifters Fishing Night

Springfield: On Fishing Night at Hamlin Sports Complex, the Springfield Drifters celebrated the McKenzie River’s rich fishing and guiding heritage with a special event that brought drift boats, local guides, and river advocates to the ballpark. Though the Drifters fell to the Yakima Valley Pippins 6-4 in a back-and-forth contest, the real win came in connecting fans with Oregon’s legendary river culture.

The unique partnership began when Audrey Spencer of McKenzie River Fishing Guides and Rafting Tours heard about the Drifters’ themed night concept and reached out to the team’s Assistant General Manager, Jasmine. Together, they brainstormed ways to authentically showcase McKenzie River culture – envisioning drift boats on display, Q&A sessions with guides, giveaways, and even having personalities from the guiding community and McKenzie River stewardship advocates throw opening pitches.

Recognizing the opportunity to engage the broader guiding community, Spencer connected with Leah Helfrich of the McKenzie River Guides Association, who activated her network to help bring the event to life. Spencer and Helfrich worked together to curate fun facts about the McKenzie River – from drift boat history and celebrity anglers to Indigenous heritage and river ecology – that were shared throughout the game via the announcer and stadium displays…
