Bob Dylan Revives “I Shall Be Released” for First Time Since 2008

Bob Dylan’s artistic drive ceases to waver. During his latest tour stop at the open-air Cuthbert Amphitheater in Eugene, Ore., the 85-year-old maven of song shuffled his setlist some, moving “Watching the River Flow” to slot one before locking into a familiar run of material that cleared a path for “I Shall Be Released.” The late ’60s masterpiece took the set’s final position and marked a monumental milestone, having been shelved since June 7, 2008. Its arrival ended an 18-year pause and underscored Dylan’s current affinity for crafting a lasting concert impression.

Previously, during Dylan’s Long Hot Summer Tour opener on June 4 at McMenamins’ Edgefield, located outside Portland, Ore., the musician placed “Baby, Won’t You Be My Baby” 13 moves into the frame.
