Eugene bicyclist killed on Interstate 5

A 40-year-old Eugene man is dead after he was hit by a car while riding his bicycle in the slow lane along Interstate 5 near milepost 21 in Linn County, northeast of Harrisburg on Sept. 9.

According to the Oregon State Police, Ryan Bird, 40, of Eugene was riding a bicycle northbound in the slow lane on the interstate when the driver of a northbound Volvo commercial motor vehicle and trailer struck him from behind.

Bird was declared dead at the scene. The driver of the Volvo was uninjured.

The highway was impacted for approximately three hours during an on-scene investigation while the driver of the Volvo remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators, according to a news release.
