UO Foundation’s private jet spending draws scrutiny amid university layoffs

In June 2025, the University of Oregon laid off 42 positions in the College of Arts and Sciences in response to a budget deficit, with decisions that were allegedly made with little-to-no consultation with affected faculty.

By September, the final count reached 117 filled positions eliminated across the university to address the shortfall.

Meanwhile, in its most recent tax filing, the University of Oregon Foundation — a private charitable organization that manages gifts to the university — lists Wheels Up Private Jets, a prepaid airfare service, as its highest-compensated independent contractor in 2024 at $5 million.
