EUGENE, Ore. — Eugene police will step up traffic enforcement in May, focusing on drivers who run red lights or stop signs and those who fail to wear seat belts.
With what the department described as a noticeable increase in some types of crashes, Eugene Police is making traffic safety a top priority in 2026. In addition to the Traffic Safety Unit, all Eugene Police patrol units will be stopping vehicles committing traffic violations in 2026, with officers focusing on specific infractions each month. For May, the focus will be Failure to Obey Traffic Control Device and Failure to Use Seatbelt.
Failure to Obey Traffic Control Device (ORS 811.265) applies when a person driving a vehicle fails to obey the directions of any traffic control device, including lights, lane markings and signs. Police emphasized that red means stop and drivers must come to a complete stop at a stop sign before entering an intersection.
