The Posey County Prosecutor Thomas Clowers is encouraging parents and guardians to take extra steps to protect children online as June marks National Internet Safety Month. Clowers says internet risks facing young people continue to grow, particularly through social media, online gaming, and messaging apps. Nationally, reports of online enticement of children increased significantly in 2025, according to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Online enticement involves individuals communicating with children over the internet with the intent to commit sexual offenses or abduction. The prosecutor says parents should establish clear rules for screen time and social media use, monitor online activity, use parental controls, and teach children not to share personal information or interact with strangers online. He also recommends keeping internet-connected devices in common areas of the home and regularly reviewing privacy settings and app usage. Clowers says children should be taught to immediately report any online interaction that makes them uncomfortable, especially if someone asks for photos, personal information, or money. Community members are encouraged to report suspicious online activity, cyberbullying, exploitation attempts, or impersonation to law enforcement.
