EVSC students return to class under new statewide phone ban

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) – Half of the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation’s students returned to class Monday under a new statewide law banning phones, smartwatches, tablets, and gaming devices for the entire school day.

Students with last names K through Z were the first to head back, walking in under Indiana’s Senate Enrolled Act 78 — which takes effect this school year for all Indiana school districts and all grade levels.

First day energy across the district

District officials said the mood across EVSC schools was upbeat as students arrived Monday morning.

“There’s so much energy, so much excitement about a new school year,” said Jason Woebkenberg, EVSC Chief Communications Officer. “A lot of things in place.”…
