Evansville man arrested after infant son found dead in ‘deplorable’ conditions

EVANSVILLE — An Evansville man stands accused of beating his infant son Thursday morning just hours before his 6-month-old child died, according to the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office.

The father, who public records identify as 25-year-old Shane Christopher Hedrick, was booked into the Vanderburgh County jail just after 4:40 p.m. Thursday on charges of neglect of a dependent resulting in death, neglect of a child, and domestic battery against a family member under the age of 14.

The VCSO disclosed information about the infant’s death shortly after Hedrick’s arrest. The Vanderburgh County Coroner’s Office will publicly identify the child after an autopsy.

“On Thursday, January 25, 2024, at 10:25 a.m., Shane Hedrick called 911 to report he had checked on his son, who was sleeping in his crib, and found he was dead,” the sheriff’s office stated in a news release. “Mr. Hedrick admitted to striking and injuring his son during the early morning hours of Thursday, January 25th, and finding the child deceased several hours later.”
