EVANSVILLE — An IHSAA wrestling postseason tournament to remember for those in the Evansville area commenced Saturday across the state. All roads lead to Ford Center, which will host the state finals and mark the first time a state championship for any sport will be held in town.
Here are a few takeaways from Saturday’s sectional action on the wrestling mats around Southwestern Indiana.
Mater Dei’s Schaefer brothers help lead team to 48th-straight sectional title
There wasn’t much fanfare when freshman Caleb Schaefer became a first-time sectional champion at Central High School. Nor when his older brother Isaiah, a junior, won his third-straight title.
The Schaefers and the rest of the Wildcats expect to have success. Ten of their wrestlers advanced to the championship round. Eight of them took home individual titles. Mater Dei continued to dominate by clinching its 48th consecutive sectional title.
“Overall, we had a good day,” Mater Dei coach Greg Schaefer said. “There was a few matches we let get away, but you’ve got to be grateful for the tough ones that you win also. (I’m) proud of the guys. Hopefully, we can take this momentum and apply it to next week.”
