Ground broken on I-69 bridge between Indiana, Kentucky; deemed ‘transformational’ project

EVANSVILLE — Officially, it was a groundbreaking — complete with dignitaries, dirt and shovels — for the I-69 Ohio River Crossing project in Evansville on Tuesday.

Rhetorically, it was a time to soar with the eagles.

“The word, ‘transformational’ gets thrown around a lot,” Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb told about 100 people who had come to the groundbreaking in a cornfield off Waterworks Road, east of Weinbach Avenue. “This project is going to have an impact for generations to come in ways that I don’t think we can quantify right now.”

Holcomb expanded on the subject with reporters afterward.

“As the economies of the future, as the industries of the future, evolve and transform themselves, we must as well invest in our people and our places to meet that moment,” he said. “And this transformational project is doing just that. It’s meeting the moment and taking us far into the future, and it’s a brighter future today than it was last week.”
