Agreement in the works in Warrick County animal cruelty case

NEWBURGH, Ind. (WEHT) – An agreement has apparently been reached in a Warrick County animal cruelty case.

Shayna Burko was scheduled to go to trial on April 14, but court records show the trial has been canceled, and a plea and sentencing date has been set for June 1. Records do not show details of the “agreed resolution,” or if the judge has agreed to accept it.

In January of 2025, Burko and her mother Kimberly were arrested after police say they found more than two dozen animals in Burko’s Newburgh home. An affidavit says several animals were dead, and the home was filed with urine and feces.

The case has gotten the attention of animal advocates because both Shayna and Kimberly have previous animal-related convictions.

Kimberly’s case remains pending.
