4-year-old girl’s death under investigation in North Carolina

RAEFORD, N.C. (WNCN) — While information remains limited until an autopsy can be performed, CBS 17 is continuing to ask questions surrounding a four-year-old who was found dead on Friday in Raeford.

On Monday, Major of Investigations with the Hoke County Sheriff’s Office, Steven Blakley, confirmed the child found deceased in the 200 block of Chantily Lane that morning was a little girl. He also said that the man in the home who was arrested on gun and drug-related charges, 32-year-old Ryheem McLaughlin Winston, is the boyfriend of the girl’s mother.

A 911 caller told the sheriff’s office that the girl was “unresponsive” just before 8 a.m. Friday. The sheriff’s office said after lifesaving measures by an EMS unit were conducted to no avail, the girl was pronounced deceased, and a joint investigation began.

The sheriff’s Criminal Investigation Division and Narcotic/Vice Suppression Unit are continuing their work to find answers to what led to the young girl’s death and the underlying cause. However, those answers may not become clearer until after an autopsy and toxicology report are completed.
