Weather Permitting: Is fall here to stay in Fayetteville? Here’s what to expect

As summer winds down in the Cape Fear region, Fayetteville usually sees one more warm spell. This year, it looks like we may miss out.

Temperatures will continue to stay well below 90 degrees as clouds and scattered showers clutter the weekend. Next week, there’s a good chance of heavier rainfall for the region and even cooler conditions.

Here’s the setup

High pressure well to our north has prevented most of the Carolinas from seeing any effects of landfalling Hurricane Francine. The mountains will see some rainfall, and perhaps some light, high clouds will drift over the Cape Fear region.

But in general, the high is creating an eastern flow, with morning clouds and widely scattered sprinkles for our region. It also is helping hold temperatures in the low 80s, dropping into the upper 60s overnight.

Friday will see Fayetteville a bit cooler than normal for mid-September as the east-northeast flow and high clouds dominate the forecast. There’s a chance of very light scattered showers in the late afternoon, but nothing to worry about for prep football games.
