The Cumberland County Board of Education voted 7-1 during an April 29 meeting to adjust the district’s calendar, making May 1 an optional teacher workday and canceling school that day for students.
Board members Delores Bell, Dr. Mary Hales, Deanna Jones, Dr. Terra Jordan, Greg West, Susan Williams and Vice Chair Jacquelyn Brown voted in favor of canceling the school day. Chair Judy Musgrave was not present at the meeting, and board member Jackie Warner, a former school administrator, cast the opposing vote.
The day coincides with a Kids Over Corporations rally at Halifax Mall in Raleigh, organized by the North Carolina Association of Educators to demand “increased funding for public schools, accountability for voucher spending, and an end to policies prioritizing tax cuts over students.”…
