FAYETTEVILLE — The Wilson Warbirds didn’t pack any home runs or even extra-base hits in their bags for their week-long stay in Fayetteville judging by their offensive display in Tuesday’s 6-0 series-opening loss to the Fayetteville Woodpeckers.
Wilson didn’t log a hit until second baseman Juan Ortuno’s two-out single in the top of the seventh inning. The only other hit came in the eighth when Luis Lameda, playing left field, ripped a single to right after third baseman Filippo Di Turi drew a leadoff walk. After both runners moved into scoring position on a balk by Woodpeckers reliever Jagger Beck, he struck out the next three batters to end the inning.
The Warbirds (12-16) saw their winning streak end at three as they struck out 10 times and went 0 for 4 with runners in scoring position, leaving four on base total. The bigger problem for Wilson was just getting runners on base. Fayetteville starter Ryan Verdugo (1-1) fired five hitless innings, walking two, while Beck worked the last three for his first save.
