Inside the world’s most elite sniper competition and why it’s about more than a trophy

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — The targets are barely visible to the naked eye. The shooters are some of the most lethal soldiers on earth.

In mid-March, WUSA9 traveled to Fort Bragg, North Carolina, for the 17th Annual U.S. Army Special Operations Command International Sniper Competition — one of the most elite, and least publicized, military competitions in the world. For five days, the best snipers in the special operations community gathered to test skills that, on any other day, they would use on a real battlefield.

Seventeen two-man teams competed: Army Special Forces, Rangers, Navy SEALs, Marine Raiders, and even the Coast Guard, alongside six teams from America’s NATO allies. All of them chasing the title of best sniper in the special operations world…
