Join the Angelman Strong Superhero 5K & Fun Run at Memorial Park

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — The Angelman Strong Superhero 5K & All-Abilities Fun Run takes place Saturday, May 30 at Memorial Park in Colorado Springs. This family-friendly event invites participants of all ages and abilities to take part in a chip-timed 5K and inclusive 1K Fun Run, all supporting and celebrating those living with Angelman syndrome. Check-in begins at 9 a.m.

Angelman syndrome is a rare neurogenetic condition that affects communication, movement, development, and can cause seizures. An estimated 500,000 people worldwide are living with the condition. All proceeds from the event benefit the Angelman Syndrome Foundation, which funds research, provides clinical support, and offers resources for families impacted by the diagnosis.

Event organizers Liz Thompson and Meghan Campagna, both mothers of daughters with Angelman syndrome, joined Loving Living Local host Justin Antweil to preview the upcoming event.

“Last year was our first year having the event, and we raised over $100,000,” said Campagna. “This is outdoor fun for an incredible cause. The money raised will go to research, and this research gives us hope that real-life-changing therapeutics will be available someday. They have built a network of specialty clinics around the world, including ours here at Children’s Hospital Colorado, where we can get high-quality healthcare from experienced providers. And, they provide direct support to families like ours, including free therapy for caregivers, sibling support programs, and financial support for things like safety beds or communication devices that may be denied by insurance.”

Packet pick-up and registration begin at 9 a.m., with the 1K Fun Run starting at 10 a.m. The Fun Run is just over half a mile on a paved path, making it accessible for all ages and abilities. The chip-timed 5K begins at 10:30 a.m…
