Mai Richards ends run across South Dakota to honor veterans in Sturgis
STURGIS, S.D. — Long distance runner Mai Richards completed a 450 mile run across South Dakota on Monday as part of her “Miles of Honor” effort, carrying the American flag from Sioux Falls to Sturgis while honoring service members and veterans along the way. Richards arrived at Harley Davidson Rally Point in Sturgis to a welcome crowd and thanked supporters who encouraged her throughout the journey. She was escorted into Sturgis by the Sturgis Post 33 American Legion Riders and the Sturgis Police Department. The welcome ceremony included a moment of silence for fallen heroes, a 21 gun salute and the playing of TAPS. (Full story)
Homemade Pipe Bomb Found During Sturgis Traffic Stop
STURGIS, S.D. — A homemade pipe bomb was discovered during a routine traffic stop Saturday evening in Sturgis, according to police. Sturgis Police Chief Geody VanDewater said the driver and passenger were arrested on alcohol and drug charges. While searching the vehicle, officers located the pipe bomb and secured the scene until Division of Criminal Investigation bomb technicians, assisted by Ellsworth Air Force Base EOD, removed it and transported it to a safe location for detonation. Assisting agencies included the South Dakota Highway Patrol, Meade County Sheriff’s Office, DCI and Ellsworth EOD. The case remains under investigation and the suspects’ names have not been released. Unattended Campfire Sparks Small Fire in Pennington County
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — An illegal campfire left unmonitored off a US Forest Service road in Pennington County ignited a small fire over the Memorial Day weekend. The Pennington County Sheriff’s Office says the owners left their campsite to drive around in the hills. While they were gone, a fire started, burning their tent and personal belongings. No one was hurt. A passerby noticed the fire and was able to put it out with water from a nearby creek. According to the U.S. Forest Service, in the Black Hills, campfires can only be started in established campfire grills and grates at designated recreation sites.
Hiker Rescued After Medical Emergency on Sunday Gulch Trail
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — The Custer County Search and Rescue responded to a call of a hiker needing help in the Custer State Park Sunday afternoon. The hiker had suddenly become weak and could not move along the Sunday Gulch Trail. Upon reaching the hiker, they were found responsive and talking but unable to walk. Fluids were administered to the hiker, who was then carried to a waiting ambulance. Custer County officials reminds outdoor enthusiasts to carry plenty of water and snacks when hiking, wear proper footwear, and let others know of the location and an expected time of return.
Late pass sends Felix Rosenqvist past David Malukas for the closest Indianapolis 500 win in history
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Felix Rosenqvist swung to the outside of David Malukas, then found a way past the Team Penske driver to win the closest Indianapolis 500 in history by a margin of 0.0233 seconds. Malukas looked like he was in position to win when he passed race leader Marcus Armstrong off the final restart with one lap to go while Rosenqvist and Armstrong battled wheel to wheel down the back straightaway and through the final turn. Rosenqvist had just enough power to pull away from Armstrong and snake behind Malukas before making the decisive pass in the final 50 feet. The closest previous finish came in 1992 when Al Unser Jr. beat Scott Goodyear across the yard of bricks by 0.043 seconds. (Full story)…
