From pneumonia to sepsis: UH doctor warns about the risks after Kyle Busch’s death

CLEVELAND (WJW) – A legend on the track, known for speed, grit and dominance, is gone far too soon.

Fans are continuing to mourn the passing of NASCAR champion Kyle Busch, a driver who defined a generation of racing.

But beyond the tributes, questions have surfaced about how a common illness like pneumonia can turn deadly.

“And what happens is, some of these bacteria or viruses stimulate the body to act in a dis-regulated response and so this becomes a life-threatening emergency,” said Dr. Kenneth Remy, a critical care specialist at University Hospitals and one of 65 physicians in the world who specializes in sepsis.
