Erie Priest Discusses Pope Leo’s First Encyclical on AI

Pope Leo XIV released his first encyclical as Pontiff, focusing on the growing role of artificial intelligence in society and the ethical questions surrounding the technology.

The 84 page document examines how AI is reshaping modern life and stresses the importance of keeping human dignity at the center of technological development.

Fr. Michael Kesicki, Chaplain at Gannon University, said the topic is one of the most pressing social issues of today. According to Fr. Kesicki, “This is a social issue that effects all of humanity. He wants to make sure humanity always has priority over any technology that can not only help us in our development but also has the capacity to diminish us.”

Fr. Kesicki also believes the timeliness of Pope Leo’s document is important in today’s day and age. “He thinks this is the new social issue that affects everything,” Kesicki said. “It has to do with war and poverty and the workforce and the ethical engagement of the workforce. It has to do with information and how we propagate information.”…
