3 men exonerated in 1997 murder of elderly woman in North Philly, DA says

Three men convicted in the 1997 murder of an elderly woman inside her North Philadelphia apartment have been exonerated, District Attorney Larry Krasner announced Tuesday.

During a news conference on May 26, Krasner said the exoneration of the three men came after a re-examination of the case found “significant issues” with the testimony of the assistant medical examiner regarding the time of death, which “undermined the integrity of these convictions.”

Mark Brittingham, Jermel Shuler, and Rasheed Smith were arrested and convicted in connection with the murder of Essie Thomas, 73, who was beaten and stabbed to death inside her apartment…
